Naples · One-day itinerary

A day in Naples.

Naples is loud, vivid, and unapologetic. The pizza was invented here; the espresso is the strongest in Italy; the centro storico is a UNESCO site that still feels lived-in rather than curated. Spend a day, eat constantly, ignore anyone who tells you it's dangerous.

Practical notes

Tips before you go.

  • Naples has a reputation for petty crime, keep wallets in front pockets, don't flash phones in busy streets. But it's nowhere near as dangerous as foreign travel forums suggest.
  • Pompeii and Herculaneum are 30 minutes away on the Circumvesuviana train. Plan a half-day each.
  • True Neapolitan pizza is wet in the middle, eat with knife and fork until cool enough to fold.
